What you’ll need:
- EziTimber gate
- Gate hinges
- Gate latch and hardware
- Measuring tape
- Spirit level
- Drill and screws
- Pencil
- Shovel (if installing posts)
Step 1. Prepare the gate posts
If you’re attaching your gate to an existing fence, you can skip the first three steps. For a brand-new installation, you’ll need to determine the placement of your gate posts. Ensure there’s enough clearance for your EziTimber gate to swing freely and mark where they’ll go.
Step 2. Dig the post holes
Once you’ve marked the positions, dig holes for your gate posts according to the size and weight of your gate.
As a general rule, for EziTimber gates like the 900 x 1500mm (17kg) or 900 x 1800mm (19kg) options, a depth of one-third the total height of the gate (around 500 to 600mm) is recommended for stability.
Remember to refer to your local building codes for specific depth requirements in your area.
Step 3. Place your gate posts
Place the gate posts in the holes, level them with your spirit level, and secure them with concrete mix. Allow the concrete to cure completely as specified on the mix packaging.
Pro Tip: For added stability, especially on uneven ground, consider using ground spikes at the bottom of the gate post.
Step 4. Mark the hinge positions
When choosing gate hinges, consider the weight of your gate and get the ones with an appropriate weight rating to support it.
Stand the gate upright in its designated spot and align the top of the gate with the top of the fence. Using your pencil, mark the hinge locations on both the gate and the fence post.
Ensure equal spacing between the top and bottom hinges. They should typically sit around 1/3 from the top and bottom of the gate.
Step 5. Attach the hinges
Position the gate hinges on the gate, aligning them with the pre-marked locations. Mark the spots for the screw holes, then pre-drill the holes to make attaching the hinges easier.
Note: hinge attachment might differ slightly depending on the hinge type. Refer to the hinge instructions if provided.
Step 6. Hang the gate
Carefully lift the gate and align the hinges on the gate with the pre-drilled holes on the fence post.
You may need another pair of helping hands to hold the gate up. Then, attach the hinge pins or screws to secure the gate in place.
Step 7. Level and adjust
Open and close the gate to check for proper alignment and clearance. Then, make any minor adjustments to the hinge positions if needed to ensure the gate swings smoothly and latches securely.
Step 8. Install the gate latch
Following the latch instructions, attach the eye bolts and D-shackles to the gate and fence post to create a secure closure point.
Step 9. Paint and customise
EziTimber gates come pre-treated; however, you can customise them with a protective coat of paint or stain. Then, with your gate swinging effortlessly in place, your project is complete.
