Not only do they look the part, but stair railings serve as a protective barrier for a safer, stronger, and more inviting deck.
EziTimber’s Hand Rail Posts are designed to provide security and support for your chosen deck stair handrail. They’re super durable, easy to install, and great for added safety and style in your outdoor space.
Thanks to their user-friendly design, you can have your deck stair railing post securely installed in just five easy steps. Let’s get started.
What you’ll need:
- EziTimber Hand Rail Posts
- Power drill
- Carriage bolts
- Washers
- Nuts
- Leveller/plumb bob
- Pencil
- Measuring tape
Step 1. Measure and mark
Starting on one side of your EziStep stringer or existing stairs, choose where you want the top and bottom Hand Rail Posts to be positioned. Usually, you’d place the bottom post around the middle of the bottom step and the top one on the deck or around the middle of the top step. The choice is an aesthetic one.
Using a pencil, mark where each hand rail post will go. For larger staircases, space out the remaining posts evenly between the top and bottom.
Once you’re happy, measure and mark the positions for the posts on the other side of the stringer.
Step 2. Prepare the stringers
Get a drill bit that is just slightly smaller than the diameter of the carriage bolts you will be using. This will ensure a secure fit and prevent the bolts from spinning freely.
Drill the pilot holes at the marked positions. Make sure the drill bit is perpendicular to the surface to prevent the holes from becoming angled or misaligned.
The pilot holes should be deep enough to hold the full length of the carriage bolts, but avoid drilling too deep, as this could weaken the structural integrity of the stringers or supports.
Step 3. Position the posts
Carefully position the right hand rail posts onto the marked locations on the stringers. For optimal alignment, work with a partner to ensure the posts are plumb (perfectly vertical) and level (horizontal). Use a level and a plumb bob to verify the alignment.
Step 4. Secure the posts
Align the pre-drilled holes in the right hand posts with the pilot holes in the stringers or supports. Put the carriage bolts through the holes and secure them with washers and nuts. Tighten the bolts firmly.
Repeat steps three and four on the left hand side.
Step 5. Choose and install a simple deck stair railing
Attach a compatible top rail to the posts using the appropriate hardware, such as clamps or screws. For safety and security, triple-check that the rail is level and securely fastened.
