How to attach stairs to a landing
If there’s a noticeable height difference or the deck stairs don’t reach the ground, consider cutting them down or installing a landing.
You can go for a wood riser or platform, a concrete platform to increase the ground height or stick with the landing you’ve got.
Step 1. Ensure the landing is level
Ensure the landing is level, structurally sound, and can support the weight of the staircase. Make sure to consider the desired height of the first step.
Step 2. Pre-drill the holes
For wooden landings: Using your drill and a suitable wood bit, pre-drill pilot holes through the platform and into the stringers at a slight downward angle for additional strength. This angle helps prevent the screws from pulling out over time.
For concrete landings: Use concrete anchors to secure the stringers to the concrete. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions for proper installation.
Step 3. Attach the stringer to the landing
Secure the stringers to the landing using appropriate wood screws. Ensure the screws are long enough to penetrate both the stringer and the landing securely.
After you attach the top of the stringers to the deck, you can use metal posts or brackets to secure it to the ground. You could also consider using concrete footings to support the landing.
Additional tips:
Check local building codes: Always consult local building codes to ensure your deck construction complies with all relevant standards.
Weatherproofing: Apply a weather-resistant sealant to the joints between the landing and the ground to protect against water damage.
How to attach your stringers to the deck
Step 1. Prepare the deck surface
Ensure the deck surface is clean and level. Remove any obstacles or obstructions that may interfere with the installation.
Step 2. Pre-drill the holes
Use your drill to pre-drill pilot holes through the deck and into the top horns of the stringers.
Step 3: Position the stringers
Lift the stringers into position, ensuring the top horns are resting securely on the deck. Adjust the stringers to ensure they are level and plumb.
Step 4: Attach the stringers
Use the pre-drilled holes in the stringers to attach them to the deck using appropriate screws. Then, use a level to ensure the stringers are level in both directions. Adjust as needed.
